WHY CHOOSE HOME CARE FOR PEOPLE LIVING WITH DEMENTIA?

Home Care For People Living With Dementia

Our at home dementia caregivers are highly trained and experienced, and understand that dementia is an umbrella term. A complex illness, it can present across a variety of symptoms, affecting the mind of each person differently.

When you choose Candour Care, you have the peace of mind that your carer fully appreciates the wide-ranging nature of these symptoms and the challenges that dementia brings to both the individual and their family. With our holistic approach and care delivered in the person’s own familiar environment, we can ease the burden and stress of dementia for all concerned, while keeping life feeling as ‘normal’ as possible.

At home dementia care services we offer

Every individual’s needs are different, so before your carer’s first visit, we’ll consult with you to ensure all service requirements and instructions are understood and agreed. Here are some examples of the types of at home care we can provide:

Personal care is an individual and sensitive matter, so our support workers are trained to provide these services in an empathetic, understanding and gracious manner. Our person-centred, customised care plans ensure that these services are delivered in the most dignified and effective way possible.

Our personal care services include:

  • Assisting with eating, bathing, using bath equipment, dental/denture care, grooming and hair care
  • Assisting with bowel regularity and skin condition/integrity
  • Emptying or changing urinary collecting devices e.g. catheter bags
  • Assistance with using urinals, bedpans and/or commodes
  • Providing bowel and bladder incontinence care
  • Assisting with comfort e.g. positioning in beds, chairs and wheelchair etc.
  • Helping the client to/from bed, wheelchair, toilet and chair

We can work alongside GPs, pharmacies and other external parties to ensure medication is managed correctly, by offering support with:

  • Storage
  • Dispensing
  • Administration
  • Disposal
  • Documentation, confidentiality and record keeping

Candour staff are trained to a high standard in medication management and the principles of safe medication administration.

Our home care services also include supporting our clients in getting a sufficient amount of fluids and nutrition – something that is often overlooked by those suffering with dementia.

We can offer a full meal preparation services, taking care of the planning and preparation of healthy and satisfying meals for those requiring this assistance.

Our meal preparation services include:

  • Encouraging a range of different food groups and planning with the client what they would prefer/enjoy for their main meals and snacks
  • Including the client in mealtimes and enjoying the companionship while preparing a meal
    together
  • Assisting with anything that the client may feel is outside of their capabilities e.g. chopping,
    slicing, and/or cutting up food
  • Making a list together before supporting with weekly grocery shopping
  • Providing comprehensive detail within the care plan regarding allergies, intolerances, and preferences.
  • PEG feeding and alternative route methods

Laundry doesn’t just mean clothing: we can assist with all household laundry including bedding, blankets, curtains etc.

Although our at home care staff always encourage inclusion and independence, where this isn’t possible, we can take over washing, ironing and putting away duties, always according to the client’s preferences.

Housework can sometimes sit low on the care priority list, but with our person-centred approach, our dementia care services also include domestic support. Our aim is to encourage independence as much as possible, while delivering the appropriate level of support – ensuring a home environment where the client feels more settled and comfortable.

Our domestic service includes but is not limited to:

  • Hoovering, dusting and mopping
  • After meal kitchen cleans e.g. washing dishes, cleaning down worktops
  • Ensuring bathroom is clean after shower support and floors are not left wet/slippery
  • Maintaining general cleanliness of client’s home

Any further requests (within reason) around domestic support can be negotiated as part of the client’s care plan.

Companionship is an essential aspect of human life; the experience of having someone to share life’s ups and downs with, someone to talk to and confide in, and someone to simply be present with. The importance of companionship cannot be overstated, having a significant, positive impact on our mental, emotional, and even physical well-being.

As social beings, we thrive on connection with others. Companionship provides us with a sense of belonging and purpose, and can help to combat feelings of loneliness and isolation – which can be prevalent in those with dementia. Having a companion can also provide us with emotional support during difficult times, and can help us to cope with stress and adversity. In addition, companionship can encourage us to engage in healthy behaviours, such as exercise, healthy eating, and self-care – and we’re more likely to prioritise our health when we have someone to share these activities with.

Lets get started

How Our At Home Dementia Care Works

Once you’ve been in touch with us, we’ll arrange a convenient time for one of our friendly management team to visit you/the client at home anywhere in the St Helen’s area to carry out an initial needs assessment.

This is a friendly and informal process and provides the base from which we’ll build your care package. By taking the time to understand the home environment and the client’s personal needs, we can provide an effective at home dementia care plan, enhancing their quality of life through meaningful support.
